Protecting more than 350 acres (140 hectares) on
th
e
i
n western PEI, equivalent to
half of the natural area. A 50-kilometre network of
salt marshes and sand dunes, the sandhills provide
habitat for various birds, including endangered
piping plovers. Multiple projects will be
announced in the fall of 2013.
Holding a successful Conservation Volunteers event
to clean up Governors Island. This year, the interest
was so great that a wait list was set up. In all, 17
volunteers removed 40 bags of garbage from the
shore, installed signage and helped fence off an
abandoned well. The event was supported by the
Province of PEI and funded by the Confederation
Bridge and TD Friends of the Environment Foundation.
On a stunning day last August, more than
60 people gathered on a beach along PEI’s
northeast shore to celebrate the protection
of significant bird habitat. The 34 acres
(14 hectares) of woodland, wetland and beach
habitat in St. Peter’s Harbour were donated
by the MacEwen family in memory of their late
brother. NCC has named it th

Equipment Co-op, Joan and Regis Duffy
and the Sobey Foundation.
