Removing 75 percent of dog-strangling vine from NCC properties in Ontario since 2010, in
collaboration with staff and partners (including the Couchiching Conservancy). The aptly

It has already encroached on hundreds of acres just south of these globally rare alvar
habitats, making NCC’s actions even more important.
With the help of partners, NCC’s Ontario Region completed the Lake Erie Biodiversity Conservation
Strategy. Lake Erie is the shallowest and most productive of all the Great Lakes, and provides
drinking water to more than 10 million people. This strategy identifies actions to protect and
restore the health of Lake Erie and will be used by government agencies in Canada and the U.S.
to better coordinate and prioritize conservation, and focus funding programs.
The biggest property ever secured by NCC in Ontario,
in northern Lake
Huron is an area of exceptional beauty and biodiversity. Along with its neighbouring
island, Manitoulin, the 22,300-acre (9,024-hectare) property, conserved by NCC in 2012,
features an incredible variety of globally significant species and plant communities. In
an international study of 32,000 islands in the Great Lakes, Cockburn Island was
ranked 10

for its conservation importance because of its biodiversity, absence of
development and untouched habitat.
