“Contributing to NCC helps honour
my father, who introduced me to
Saskatchewan’s nature when I was a
teenager. When not working as a
doctor he enjoyed hunting and loved
being outdoors. In those days I didn’t
appreciate the landscape that much,
but today, I know more about the
intense development pressures on
the land and enjoy hiking in
preserved areas, so I invest in land
conservation through NCC.”

Securing NCC’s 125-acre (50-hectare)
with additional support from the Go Green Fund
and a generous grant from Mountain Equipment Co-op
(MEC) of $50,000. The grant supports NCC’s land
securement in the Missouri Coteau — one of North
America’s most significant tracts of prairie grasslands,
lakes and pothole complexes. This band of hills in
southern Saskatchewan that extend into North and
South Dakota is vital habitat for birds such as Sprague’s
pipit, loggerhead shrike, the endangered piping
plover and burrowing owl.
Forming new relationships with Saskatchewan residents
and visitors through a number of events. We welcomed
close to 100 guests to our Speaker Series, which was
held in both Regina and Saskatoon. More than 87 volun-
teers attended eight Conservation Volunteers events. The
Saskatchewan Region participated in Wings Over Wascana
and Wild About Saskatoon—public events that attracted
more than 500 participants. And the Property Watch pro-
gram, which invites individuals to adopt NCC properties
and help care for them, attracted 15 individuals and the
participation of youth from both the Edenwold School
and the entire Regina Public School system.
Saskatchewan’s
is a transition zone.
Sandwiched between the prairie and the boreal
forest, this is where the grasslands yield to trees.
It is here that NCC’s Saskatchewan Region secured
its first property through the Saskatchewan
Ministry of Environment’s
by acquiring the 636-acre (257-hectare)
Edenwold properties. The secured properties
consist of native prairie grassland, woodland
and wetland areas, providing habitat for various
mammals, grassland birds and wetland species.
